Networking with a DP2000/ DP8000

Networking your Wholehog to your DP 2000 or DP 8000
Note: This resource is specific to software version 3.0 or greater.

All devices on a Wholehog network require an IP address and Subnet. You can choose from several networking scenarios to acomplish this:

1.  Configure the network settings manually
2.  Set your console as a DHCP Server
3.  Use a router to set the IP/Subnet

Below are set-up instructions for each scenario

UPDATED

Option 1:
Connect Directly by Manually Configuring your Network

Connecting your console with a DP using static network settings:

1. Ensure that you are using Wholehog Software Version 3.0 or better. If you are using a personal computer, please disable all firewalls.

2. Use a cross-over cable if connecting directly to 1 DMX Processor (nothing else on the network)

3. If you are using multiple DPs or other network devices you will need a simple Ethernet switch (no management or IP assignments) and you will need to use Non-crossover (patch) cables.

4. On your console, you need to set a static IP and Subnet.
If you are using Hog3PC on your personal computer, disable any other network connections (wireless, firewire, etc).
  a. Press the SETUP key, and select CONTROL PANEL from your main toolbar (This can also be accessed from the “Start” menu).
  b. In the Control Panel, select the NETWORK tab
  c. From the drop down menu, your “HogNet Adaptor" should list your console’s Ethernet port. (this especially important to setup correctly when using Hog3PC on a computer with multiple network adaptors)
  d. Select "Use Default IP settings"
  e. Under DHCP / Boot Server, select “Enable Boot Server” only
  f. Press "OK."

5. If you are using Hog3PC, Roadhog Full Boar, or an iPC, set your DP’s Net Number to 2 or higher. Doing so will allow you to use DP’s and additionally USB widgets or superwidgets. If you choose not use widgets at this time, we still recommend setting your DP to 2 or higher, as this will allow you the option to add widgets later. The lack of a DP#1 will not be detrimental to your DMX processing.
-To set the Net Number on your DP:
     a. Select “Network” from the LCD.
     b. From the Network window, you can change the Net Number to 2 or higher.

6. Set your DP’s IP address and subnet to match the range of your console’s network. (You can see your console’s default IP and Subnet listed below “Use Default IP Settings” in the Network tab of the Control Panel- see step 5).
To set your DP:
   a. Select “Network” from the LCD
   b. Select “IP Status”
   c. Select “IP Config”
   d. In this window, ensure that “Use DHCP” is not checked.
   e. Also in this window, you will need to set the IP and Subnet to match the range of the Hog - The IP address should be the same range as the console but not the exact same address. Changing the last digit will suffice. - The subnet should be exactly the same - After setting these, select “OK.”

*If you are using the console’s “Default IP settings,” then one possible configuration for the DP would be to set the DP’s IP address as 172.31.0.2 and the Subnet as 255.255.0.0. An additional DP could be set as 172.31.0.3 and Subnet: 255.255.0.0 and so on.

Important: After you set these addresses, the DP must be reset for this information to take effect. Simply power cycle the DP to do this.

7. Once your DP connects to the show server, you may be prompted to upgrade the software. You can do this right from the console. The system will prompt you and walk you through this.

Option 2:
Setting your console
as a DHCP Server

How to connect a DP with your console set as a DHCP Server:

1. Ensure that you are using Wholehog Software Version 3.0 or better. If you are using a personal computer, please disable all firewalls.

2. Use a cross-over cable if connecting directly to 1 DMX Processor (nothing else on the network) If you are using multiple DPs or other network devices you will need a simple Ethernet switch (no management or IP assignments) and you will need to use Non-crossover (patch) cables.

3. Set your console as a DHCP server: If you are using Hog3PC on your personal computer, disable any other network connections (wireless, firewire, etc).
(this especially important to setup correctly when using Hog3PC on a computer with multiple network adaptors)
   d. Select “Use Default IP Settings”
   e. Select “Enable DHCP and Boot Server”.
   f. Click “OK.”

-To set the Net Number on your DP:
    a. Select “Network” from the LCD screen of your DP.

5. The DP will need to be set for DHCP. To do this: a. Select “Network” from the LCD b. Select “IP Status” c. Select “IP Config” d. In this window, you will need to select “Use DHCP”. Important: After you set these addresses, the DP must be reset for this information to take effect. Simply power cycle the DP to do this.

6. Once your DP connects to the show server, you may be prompted to upgrade the software. You can do this right from the console. The system will prompt you and walk you through this.

Option 3:
Using a Router

How to connect your console with a DP using a router:

1. Ensure that you are using Wholehog software version 3.0 or better. If you are using a personal computer, please disable the firewalls for the Local Area Connection that you will be utilizing.

2. Use non-crossover (patch) Ethernet cables with your router

3. On your console, you need to set HogNet to listen for DHCP.
(this especially important to setup correctly when using Hog3PC on a computer with multiple network adaptors)
   d. Select “Obtain an IP address using DHCP”
   e. Ensure that “Enable Boot Server Only” is checked.
   f. Click “OK.”

4. If you are using Hog3PC, Roadhog Full Boar, or an iPC, set your DP’s Net Number to 2 or higher. Doing so will allow you to use DP’s and additionally USB widgets or superwidgets. Special Note:

These instructions are not meant to be final... there are a lot of ways you can establish a network connection over HogNet.  These are simply 3 possible scenarios.
